Function: A Gui was a primary ritual container used in ancestral tombs and formal state ceremonies to hold cooked grain offerings (such as millet or rice). Structure: It features a circular, bulbous bowl flanked by two large loop handles. The entire upper body is cast directly atop a heavy, hollow square pedestal base (方座), which was a prestigious design variation reserved for elite members of Western Zhou society. Handles: The handles are heavily stylized as mythical beasts or dragons with large eyes and prominent horns, gripping the rim of the bowl. Surface Decoration: The exterior of the container and the square base are decorated with dense, low-relief bands of taotie (monster mask) and stylized dragon/phoenix motifs typical of late Western Zhou bronzework
